A research study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, in fact, has identified sugar as one of the chief culprits behind the appearance of sagging skin and wrinkles. In a bit of scientific irony, sugar in the diet leads to a process called glycation, in which blood sugar molecules latch onto nearby proteins and produces compounds called advanced glycation end products, acronym AGEs.
And each AGE you develop is capable, and usually does, latch on to other nearby proteins. Given that collagen and elastin, the two substances most responsible for keeping your skin looking young and firm, are proteins, they are extremely vulnerable to being damaged by AGEs. As they lose their flexibility, becoming cracked and torn, the skin above them will “cave in” and wrinkles appear.
By the age of 35, most of us have eaten enough sugar so that the number of AGEs we have accumulated begin to surface as wrinkled skin, and their effects multiply rapidly from there.
Dermatologist Frederic Brandt, MD, has studied the effects of AGEs and indicates that too much sugar in an individual’s diet is actually capable of changing the kind of collagen that person has. Type III collagen, for instance, is the most durable and stable of the three most common types. But the glycation process can change Type III collagen to the much weaker Type I, and cause the skin to lose its elasticity.
An equally devastating effect of AGEs is that they stop your body from producing the antioxidants with which it fights the free radical damage from sun exposure. Losing the sugar, however, will require more than just giving up desserts and between meal sweet snacks and sodas. Any sort of carbohydrates, even veggies and fruits, as well as unprocessed grains, eventually break down into glucose in your bloodstream, and glucose causes glycation, which in turn causes AGEs.
What you can do is limit your intake of added sugar–rhat which is not a natural component food–to ten percent of the calories you consume each day. You’ll have to determine the proper amount of calories you should consume to maintain a healthy weight. You’ll also have to learn to read labels on processed foods, because almost all of them contain some kind of sugar. If it ends in -ose, it’s a sugar. Corn syrup is a sugar, as is barley malt, molasses, and maple syrup. Raw sugar is still sugar.
Each teaspoon of sugar contains 16 calories, and you can easily determine how many teaspoons of sugar each serving of a packaged food contains by seeing how many grams of sugar are in it and dividing that number by four, which is the number of grams in a teaspoon. So if your breakfast cereal has 8 grams of sugar per serving, that means it has 2 teaspoons, or 32 calories, of sugar.
Of all the forms of sugar, high fructose corn syrup is both the most widely used in processed food and the one thought to produce the most AGEs. High fructose corn syrup acts as a preservative, is a highly concentrated sweetener, and is very inexpensive so manufacturers love it. It is used in everything from breakfast cereals to sodas to breads and pastries.

As good as life cell skin wrinkle cream is, it would be even better if it could stop me wanting chocolate!

An excessive amount of sugar can be harmful to your body. High blood sugar levels can cause exaggerated oil production and can thus trigger unwanted amounts of skin oil and whatnot. Keep sugar consumption in moderation and you will see yourself grow healthier.
